Discard Arrogant Wurm and Basking Rootwalla for free with Wild Mongrel. Counter their answers. Beat them down with cheap fatties.
A tempo-aggro deck built around the madness mechanic. UG Madness turns discard into an advantage — every card you throw away becomes a free creature or a cheap counterspell.
Wild Mongrel is the heart of the deck. A 2/2 for 1G that gets +1/+1 and changes color whenever you discard a card. But the real power is what you discard: Basking Rootwalla has madness 0, meaning you cast it for free when you discard it to Mongrel. Arrogant Wurm has madness 2G — a 4/4 trample for three mana at instant speed.
Careful Study is a one-mana sorcery that draws two and discards two. On turn one, it can put two Rootwallas into play for free. On turn two, it sets up a turn-three Arrogant Wurm off a Mongrel discard.
Circular Logic is the deck’s signature counterspell. It normally costs 2U, but its madness cost is just U — discard it to Wild Mongrel, pay one blue mana, and counter their spell. The opponent plays into open mana at their peril.
Daze counters a spell for free by returning an Island. Combined with Circular Logic, the deck can protect its threats without keeping mana open.
Aquamoeba is a second discard outlet — a 1/3 that swaps power and toughness when you discard, becoming a 3/1 attacker. Frantic Search draws two, discards two, and untaps three lands — it’s essentially free and triggers madness twice.
Wonder is never cast. You discard it to Mongrel or Careful Study, and from the graveyard it gives all your creatures flying. A flying 4/4 Arrogant Wurm is nearly impossible to race.
Roar of the Wurm costs 3GGG to cast but only 3G to flash back from the graveyard. Discard it early, flash it back later for a 6/6 token.
UG Madness is aggressive but interactive. It applies a fast clock while holding up permission — the opponent can never tap out safely when Circular Logic and Daze are live.
